Linux on MacBook!
Funny thing happened to me today! I had just finished installing Windows on my Macbook, and it was rebooting. As it was rebooting I noticed it was saying, “Press any key to boot from cd…” It was already past the apple boot loader, so I wondered if this extra boot from cd option would work with Linux. I popped in the last Ubuntu cd I had burned and behold! It booted with no errors, with X and all. I started poking around to see what worked and what didn’t. From what I can tell so far, EVERYTHING works.
Touch pad and keyboard work perfectly fine, even my wireless Microsoft (usb) mouse works. I couldn’t actually test the wireless card but it seems to work, and dmesg shows that bluetooth had actually fired up! The only thing I’ve noticed really wrong with this livecd is the screen resolution. Since the macbook is a widescreen the default resolution of 1024×768 is a little stretched, but who cares! Seems as though we might have the perfect Linux laptop on our hands…

if you use Parallels, you can use the fast-switcher to flip between desktops of OSX and Ubuntu :

Wouldn’t that be a huge burden on the processor?
I’d imagine it’d use a huge amount of RAM too.

Surprisingly, not really. I’ll take some more photos of processor usage and such soon but overall it seems quite ’snappy’ and responsive.

This is something really both funny and strange at the same time. The resolution problem could have been avoided though with usage of proper cables.
